Abstract

Michelstaedter examined the human living condition in the early XX
century. His position is very critical towards education, because it aims to obtain
reliable and submissive citizens. Education is a dishonest practice that deludes young
men and leads them to an alienated life, subjected to the rules of “rhetoric”. The
student, motivated by prizes and punishments, only studies for the future, without
living the present time. Michelstaedter’s theory anticipates topics and questions that
will be reprised by existentialists and by pedagogical dissenters.
