Abstract
A hundred years after her birth, the interest for the life and work of Jane Jacobs has increased with renewed vigour in international literature, placing the topic of the streets and of public space, and in general the way in which a city “functions”, at the centre of the debate. The paper analyses these themes with specific focus on the metabolism of complex systems and the self-organization and self-production practices of cities, developing an approach that takes into account the great transformations in the processes of urbanisation and the necessity to recognize and reproduce both the specificities and the diversities of cities.
