Rural development is an interactive process involving people, institutions, and enterprises at various levels. Its complexity stems from the central role played by human capital. Therefore, studying rural development processes requires a multidimensional approach, encapsulated in this special focus as rural studies. In recognition of her pioneering contributions to rural studies, this special focus is dedicated to Flaminia Ventura (1958–2022).
