Abstract

Yusuf Atılgan (1927-1989), a unique writer in the Turkish context of the post-World War Two period, deals with themes related to subjectivity and the difficult assertion of the self in the Turkish context during the 1960s and 1970s. Atılgan delves into these issues from a perspective that explicitly addresses the processes of shaping male identities in relation to the models of hegemonic masculinity developed in the foundational decades of the modern nation. The article aims to illustrate this relationship by concurrently examining the representation of masculinity in the novels Aylak Adam (The Idler, 1959) and Anayurt Oteli (Motherland Hotel, 1973).
