Abstract
Partly critical essay and partly confessional memoir, this ‘anomalous’ contribution moves from Stephen Crane’s controversial poems of the 1890s to address and explore interlingual and intersemiotic aspects of translation in poetry and the visual arts. In the wake of the critical reassessment enjoyed by Crane’s verse in the American canon over the past decade, the authors show how a sort of individual and mutual conversation with Crane’s artistic imagination has resulted in productive semiotic interactions between literary translation and the art of illustration on one side, and between photography and poetry on the other.
