Abstract
Overcoming the current emergency phase calls for a profound rethinking of the approach to the project. The 'ecological transition' to which the main European policies are oriented is the mainstay for a different economic growth, to promote actions that can improve the ecosystems and the landscape in which we live. The strong need for planning will have to respond looking at the complexity of the design of the changing contexts, with an approach that is free from rigidity and from the need for a rapid execution, to propose instead, dynamic reflection fields. The contribution starts from the issue of urban forestation, as a field of reflection of the ecological transition project, facing it in spatial terms for social and environmental sustainability. Considering both the symbol and the scientific and ambivalent meaning that the forest has had over time, the contribute examines as, in the urban project, the use of the forest as a ‘pioneer landscape’ can usefully be placed in the national strategies, innovating the practice.
