Abstract
The two authors of this contribution have been collaborating together for several years on a workshop titled “Photography as an instrument of urban analysis”. The pictures presented here are not the product of the students of the workshop, but the professional activity of Davide Virdis, however the spirit that is visible behind them is the same that we try to teach: not simply and only the production of well tempered images, but the underlining of a reality made visible by the images. The text is composed of two parts: the first tries to reflect on the nature of the city through a very simple exercise of comparison between classical definitions. It starts from the most basic, contained in dictionaries, to develop a small critical/interpretative path that leads us towards the nature of the everyday city. In the second reflects more precisely on the images that allow us to learn to look and, looking, to reflect on the future that we wish as appropriate for the city as a shared space.
