Abstract

This paper presents the results of a Germany-wide student survey on the use of chatbots in academic writing, conducted in autumn 2023. Based on an analysis of students' free texts and factor analyses of 3,997 questionnaires, the paper provides an overview of how students use chatbots. The paper then focuses on the three main types of use: inspiration and information; help with wording and linguistic correction; and evaluation of research literature. These uses are assigned to roles in the GPT model by Steinhoff and Lehnen (2025), with the partner role being the most common. Overall, students' responses reveal the potential and risks of AI use, highlighting the need for support in the form of writing instruction and reflection.
