Abstract

This article reports on a replication study examining the use of generative AI in academic writing, which was conducted at the University of Siegen as part of the KIMADU project. A survey of 183 participants revealed that over 94% had used AI to summarise literature, support argumentation and develop research questions. Students who rated their writing skills more highly were less reliant on AI. This paper uses the findings to highlight similarities and differences with other samples, and to identify aspects and connections that characterise the development of academic writing with AI. We therefore conclude by postulating an AI agency model of academic writing.
