Abstract

This article examines how artificial intelligence (AI) can support German language learners with their academic writing, focusing particularly on the use of ‘generic scientific language’ (Alltagswissenschaftssprache) expressions. The analysis is based on a small corpus of student texts. It focuses on the introductions and conclusions, as these sections contain a high density of argumentative and text-deictic expressions. The potential of AI as a support tool for improving academic writing competencies in the field of German as a foreign language is critically examined by analysing the transformations carried out by the AI writing assistant, DeepL Write, on the student texts..
