Abstract
Lao She (1899-1966) is one of the most famous contemporary Chinese writers. Skilled and versed in writing novels and theater pieces, he was a great connoisseur and master of the Chinese language, so much so that he was the first writer to be awarded the title of “artist of the people” (훙췽 論減소 Renmin yishujia) after the foundation of the Chinese Peoples Republic in 1949. His most representative works, 쭸鼓卷綾 (Luotuo xiangzi; Richshaw), 愷各谿慊 (Sishi tongtang; Four generations under one roof) and 꿱반 (Chaguan; The teahouse Theater house) are texts that all Chinese know and possess. During the cultural revolution Lao She suffered severe attacks and he was persecuted several times, so much so that he decided, in 1966, to commit suicide by throwing himself into the Taiping Lake in Beijing, unable to bear the continuous humiliation.
