Abstract

This paper proposes a reconsideration of the phenomenon of extra-urban medieval residences, both from a quantitative andqualitative point of view. It aims at analysing the compositional criteria that regulate such an abundant production, as well asidentifying models and possibly reconstruct the network of relationships between the most challenging buildings, thus applyingto medieval architecture the same historico-critical analysis that is usually used in the case of Renaissance architecture. Thismethod of interpretation, which privileges compositional aspects as well as stylistic choices, is applied to a most significantresidence built near Florence from the merchant family of the Buonaccorsi in the middle of the XIV century, shortly before itscomplete political and economic downfall.
