Abstract

In recent decades, reflections on planning have centred on the discipline’s fields, methods and techniques, and teaching, particularly in relation to its many dualisms (planning-urban planning, planning-design, etc.). Recognising planning’s expansive nature and the planner’s meta-technical and discursive capacity to transcend the boundaries of strictly disciplinary knowledge, this paper combines a literature review with a qualitative and quantitative exploration—including analysis of texts and textual clusters using Iramuteq—of prevailing approaches in Italian academia. The study begins with an examination of all research grants awarded in the two Scientific Disciplinary Sectors (SSD), ICAR20 Urban Planning and Techniques and ICAR21 Urban Planning, between 2023 and 2025. Reflections on the disciplinary evolution were conducted, taking into account the topics covered over the three-year period, in the SSDs, at universities, and at departments.
