Abstract

The paper investigates the transformation of street space within contemporary urban policies. Starting from a critique of reducing of mobility to a technical issue, the article examines three ongoing experiences in the Netherlands, Amsterdam, Apeldoorn and Groningen, where streets are being reinterpreted as a multifunctional public space. Rather than focusing on completed projects, the paper examines the integration of urban spatial design into mobility governance mechanisms. The case studies demonstrate varying degrees of institutionalization and operational implementation of these approaches, highlighting the shift from viewing the street as infrastructure to viewing it as an integrated component of urban policy. This paper contributes to an ongoing debate and aims to emphasize the role of urban planning and landscape architecture in developing tools capable of influencing contemporary urban transformation processes.
