Abstract
The territorialist approach proposes an original version of democracy, emphasizing the role of many place-based experiences of self-organization that trigger specifically political paths. In this paper, the idea of participatory federalism proposed by Alberto Magnaghi is discussed raising three challenging issues: the need to move from a local approach to a trans-scalar approach; the need to promote collaboration and reciprocity, but also to renew redistribution and social protection within an enabling public action framework; the need to promote multiple identities. Furthermore, it is argued that not only local populations, but also some ‘traditional’ intermediate bodies, such as trade unions, are experimenting with new forms of political action. In conclusion, it is argued that this plurality of actors and patterns suggests a perspective of democratic political experimentalism, which brings together different actors, different rationalities, different forms of integration of the economy in the social space, different scales of action.
