Ecofeminist Tropes of the Ocean in Contemporary Irish and Galician Poetry

Abstract

The present study examines the oceanic tropes of ecofeminist relevance featured in the recent poetic production of two Atlantic communities with comparable cultural and environmental features: Ireland and Galicia. The focus will be on current renderings of an endangered ocean and the role that female authorship and configurations of femininity play in them. Among its aims, this article will assess whether there have appeared new poetic tropes that may convey the altered ecological conditions of the seas and whether current ecofeminist ocean tropes succeed in drawing attention to the common materiality and destiny of human and more-than-human nature. The poems under analysis are taken from anthologies and individual poetry collections from the last two decades.
