Abstract
Can fashion be considered one of the possible worlds of art? Fashion, the aesthetic economy par excellence, is more often associated with craftsmanship than with art. However, a progressive artification of fashion regarding the function and structure of clothing is undeniable, at least in relation to specific contexts, actors, and creations. This process originated with the early talented tailors and evolved through both the historical and new avant-gardes. As a bodily simulacrum, the garment is capable of amplifying symbolic meanings – all the more so in the case of an art-garment. Using a sociological key, this essay analyzes the relational dynamics, the normative dimension, the characteristics of artisticity, and the stages of artification in fashion, considering the different approaches adopted by fashion designers and artists.
