Abstract

Through empirical observation of far-right politicians currently present in national politics of several countries, as well as scientific research, we know, that far-right ideology goes hand in hand with misogyny and anti-environmentalism. Nevertheless, this ideological triad hasn’t been subject to scientific scrutiny. There is research on far-right ideology and patriarchal misogyny, on far-right populism and anti-environmental attitudes and further on anti-environmentalism and patriarchal gender roles. This article connects these three research paradigms through quantitatively assisted discourse analysis of environmental issues in an online forum of Incels (involuntary celibates). Incels are an online community of misogynist extremists, or far-right white supremacists, depending on which academic and security agency sources one considers. This ambiguity of Incel ideology makes them a perfect candidate to research the ideological triad of far-right, misogyny and anti-environmentalism. The analysis shows, technocratic and knowledgeable engagement with scientific or policy issues frequently coexisting with, and lending legitimacy to, conspiratorial interpretations. Incel environmental discourse does not simply reject climate science but selectively reinterprets it in ways that reinforce far-right worldviews, demonstrating how environmental issues can function as sites where scientific (mis)information, misogyny, and far-right ideology mutually reinforce.
