Abstract
The article explains Ernesto Codignola’s central role among 20th-century Italian educational theorists, illustrating the characteristics of his idealistic phase, his relationship with fascism, and his subsequent shift in direction, which led to his appointment as director of the Institute of Pedagogy in Florence. In particular, this later period offers significant insights that allow us to view Codignola as a relevant figure today—one capable of recognizing the value of democracy and the importance of fostering citizenship within educational settings.
