Alvaro Siza Vieira – La torre di 611 West 56th Street

Abstract

L’esordio di Álvaro Siza a Manhattan con la torre al 611 West 56th Street segna l'incontro tra una carriera magistrale e il tipo del grattacielo americano. Situato a Hell’s Kitchen, l’edificio di 136 metri e 35 piani rifugge la retorica dell’individualismo formale dello skyline newyorkese, proponendo una geometria solida e icastica. Il progetto non aderisce mimeticamente ai codici locali, ma li reinterpreta attraverso un lessico colto e radicato altrove. L'organizzazione spaziale delle unità abitative pone al centro il tema dello sguardo: la proiezione verso l'esterno trasforma il paesaggio urbano – dal DeWitt Clinton Park al fiume Hudson – nel fulcro concettuale dell'impianto, definendo una nuova relazione dialettica tra spazio domestico e metropoli.

Álvaro Siza’s debut in Manhattan with the 611 West 56th Street Tower represents the meeting point between a masterful career and the American skyscraper typology. Located in Hell's Kitchen, the 35-storeyed, 136 metres-high building rejects the rhetoric of formal individualism typical of the New York skyline, offering instead a solid and figurative geometry. The project does not mimetically adopt the local codes, but rather reinterprets a cultured vocabulary that is rooted elsewhere. The spatial arrangement of the residential units places the theme of the gaze at the core of the design: their projection towards the exterior transforms the urban landscape – from the  DeWitt Clinton Park to the Hudson river - into the conceptual fulcrum of the whole complex, establishing a new dialectical relationship between domestic space and the city.
