Abstract
Jean Ehrard, who passed away in 2023, was a leading scholar in the history of ideas of the Age of Enlightenment, and the author of a massive and important work on the idea of nature in 18th-century France. Starting from a re-reading of his major work and its reception in France, this essay focuses on Ehrard’s methodological reflections, connected to the debate on the history of ideas in the 1960s and 1970s and to international trends of historiography in this field.
