Abstract

The official statistics on the movements of the immigrant population of the last 20 years in Sicily show a significant increase in foreign presences. Movements go beyond the seasonal dimension and are concentrated in non-urban areas with a greater agricultural vocation, where there are also high levels of economic innovation (Trapani and Ragusa). It is often a phenomenon with paradoxical outlines, considering that the economic results of quality agriculture are counterbalanced by the conditions in which immigrants live and work, being denied the right to the city and citizenship. Therefore, there is a significant interde- pendence between agricultural development and foreign presences that this paper intends to deepen by analyzing the spatial consequences of migration and the weakness of local policies.
