Abstract
Streets are an important part of the landscape of everyday life. Much social life and learning occur along streets: streets have meaning for people, invite access for all, encourage use and participation, are loved, and are well cared for by their users. In this paper the story of life and street culture is reconsidered, and in the concluding part an alternative perspective is introduced, that of "democratic streets", which provides a broader and more holistic view of street culture.
