Abstract
In this paper I argue that walking has the features of performative utterances, as defined by Austin and then clarified by Derrida and by Butler. By walking individuals make up their own identities publicly. The first section provides an historical framework. The second section reviews Augoyard’s ‘rhetoric’ of walking. The third section applies speech acts theory to walking. The conclusive section discusses some implications of this perspective.
