About the Journal
Focus and Scope
Another Now. A Journal of the History of Ideas is a peer-reviewed, open access journal devoted to the history of ideas, understood as a broad and interdisciplinary field of inquiry. It draws inspiration on the one hand from the tradition of scholarship inaugurated by Arthur Lovejoy and George Boas, founders of the Journal of the History of Ideas, and, on the other, from the work of the historian of ideas Paolo Rossi (1923–2012). The journal’s title is inspired by Paolo Rossi’s 1999 book Un altro presente (“Another Now”). It aims to explore the past and analyze the present through its lens. The past is rediscovered not just as a world “other” than our own, but also as one marked by the same uncertainty and unpredictability that define our present. Too often, we fail to look back or do so only selectively and ideologically. The journal seeks to examine our present by tracing the complex roots of the problems we face.
Moving beyond the confines of narrow academic specializations, Another Now challenges the outdated notion of a divide between the “two cultures”. It focuses on broad, long-term themes, particularly ideas that, due to their enduring influence, continue to evolve and reemerge in unexpected ways. The journal embraces problem-oriented analyses that cross disciplinary boundaries, in the spirit of Rossi and Lovejoy’s collaborative, integrative approaches.
Another Now adopts a monographic format, selecting themes that engage not only specialist readers but also a broader audience. It welcomes contributions from professional historians as well as scholars from other disciplines who bring a historical perspective and can shed light on key issues and shifts in their fields and their connections to other areas of knowledge. The journal is particularly attentive to the mutual influences between the sciences and the broader intellectual landscape, tracing how scientific developments and debates shape ideas and values – and how, in turn, prevailing ideas and cultural shifts influence scientific inquiry. More generally, Another Now recognizes that major debates – whether concerning the past or present – are deeply shaped by historical upheavals and by broader transformations across culture and society, including shifts in worldviews, scientific paradigms, and political ideologies.
At the heart of the Another Now is the conviction that the history of ideas deepens our awareness of the origins of our ways of thinking. “If that is not important,” wrote George Boas in 1969, “I wonder what is.” It mattered then – and perhaps even more so today, in a world shaped by globalization and the often uneasy interplay of cultures, values, and ways of life.
Technical Characteristics
Another Now publishes both thematic and non-thematic issues, with a focus on topics of broad historical and intellectual relevance, selected to engage both specialists and a wider readership. Articles are primarily authored by academics, but the journal also welcomes interdisciplinary and cross-institutional collaborations, including co-authorships involving early-career researchers or scholars from different fields. Contributions are accepted primarily in English, though submissions in other major European languages – such as Italian and French – are also welcome.

Peer-Review Process
The peer review process is double-blind peer review.
Another Now employs a double-blind peer review process, ensuring that both authors and referees remain anonymous throughout the evaluation. Upon submission, manuscripts are reviewed by at least two independent experts in the relevant field. Referees are asked to assess the quality, originality, and relevance of the research, as well as the clarity and coherence of the argument. Authors can expect to receive feedback within 4-6 weeks. If the reviews are positive but suggest revisions, authors are required to submit the revised manuscript within 2-4 weeks. The editorial team manages the review process with transparency and efficiency, facilitating constructive dialogue between authors and reviewers to ensure the highest academic standards.
The Journal also publishes a limited number of contributions that are not subject to peer review, as they fall under specific editorial categories:
- Editorial: is classified as Editorial content, and does not undergo peer-review.
- Echoes, Reviews, and New Books: contributions published in these section are not subject to peer-review.
Special Issues
Another Now will also publish thematic issues centered around a single topic, selected and curated by the Editorial Team. Each issue will explore the theme from various disciplinary perspectives, ensuring that contributions address it from different angles. While the editorial team is responsible for selecting both the theme and contributors, Call for Papers (CFP) will be issued for specific themes to invite additional contributions that align with the issue’s focus. All submissions, whether solicited by the editorial team or received through the CFP, will undergo the usual double-blind peer review process to ensure high academic standards and quality. This approach combines curated thematic issues with an open submission process, allowing the journal to maintain rigor while welcoming diverse contributions.
The reviewer reports are not published.
Publication decisions by the Editors-in-Chief are final.
Editors-in-Chief reserve the right to reject submissions that do not meet the journal’s academic standards or fall outside the defined scope, without sending them for external peer review. Submissions may be rejected on the basis of factors including, but not limited to, poor academic quality, lack of clarity, weak argumentation, failure to adhere to the journal’s style guidelines, or being unfit for the journal’s interdisciplinary approach.
A plagiarism check is performed using Crossref Similarity Check (iThenticate), to ensure the originality of submitted manuscripts.
