Abstract

In spite of numerous philosophical papers concerning this topic, the philosophical approach of music criticism has not been carefully considered. For this purpose, I study in this paper the relationships between ontology of music and music criticism. A philosophical study of music criticism requires the lights of ontology of music, while music criticism is not devoid of ontological problems. The lessons and aporias of contemporary philosophical perspective on music criticism allow us to consider otherwise nineteenth century’s music criticism. It leads us to ask the following question: are we today facing an “ontological turn” in music criticism?
