Abstract

While allegories of the four continents originated in the 16th century, their high time they experienced in the 18th century. In the core of the Baroque era of the Holy Roman Empire, hundreds of buildings were frescoed with allegories of the four continents. Their substantive statements range from religious missionary goals to the presentation of the history of civilization. Often the depictions are crowned with Apollo, who represents world wisdom in this context.
