Abstract

One of the effects of the Quarrel of the Ancients and the Moderns and the polemics against the Ancients was to detach from the Belles Lettres the sciences and arts where the «progress of the human spirit» surely overcomes. This victory led to many protests. In the second half of the 18th century, attempts were made to reassess the contributions of the Ancients, notably Pliny and Aristotle, and the large debt owed to them.
