Abstract

The article aims to analyze the disputes between the Neapolitan Society of Jesus and the citizens of Latronico related with the anti-Jesuits behaviours that were growing within the reformist circles. The theme returned in an anonymous report, called Riassunto dello Stato in cui attualmente trovansi le controversie agitate fra l’Università della Terra di Latronico, ed il Barone, o Tenutario pro tempore della medesima dall’anno 1523 sin all’anno 1767. Interesting is the chapter dedicated to the management of pastures, state lands and baronial defenses. Through the analysis of this document, it is possible to focus on the strategies of appropriation of the territory by the feudal power. At the same time, the pleas of Latronico citizens to the defense of their rights highlight the most popular motifs of anti-Jesuit propaganda.
