Abstract

The essay reconsiders in the light of the crucial problem of translation the so-called controversy on the ‘present taste’, in which, starting from 1781, Matteo Borsa, Ippolito Pindemonte, Francesco Maria Colle, Clemente Sibiliato, Melchiorre Cesarotti, Saverio Bettinelli and others participated in varying degrees: a significant moment in the process of defining Italian cultural identity and of elaborating new critical and aesthetic ideas in an era of transition, particularly for the development of neoclassicism.
