Abstract

Here's the new translation by Fabrizio Desideri of Hölderlin's magnificent hymn Patmos, focal point of Hölderlin's remarks about the notion of lebendiges, the “living element”. In this hymn the death of Christ is depicted as a cesura, a rift between the sensitive antiquity and our suffering, gorforsaken modernity.
